- Tread depth: Try the penny test. Insert a penny into the tread with Lincoln’s head facing down. If you can see the top of his head, tread is below 2/32” and it’s time for new tires before this trip.
- Spare tire: Confirm it’s inflated and that you have a working jack and lug wrench in the car.
- Sidewall condition: Look for cracks, bubbles, or cuts, especially on tires older than five years.

- Coolant/antifreeze: Low coolant is one of the leading causes of summer overheating. Check the reservoir and top off as needed.

3. Brakes
At highway speeds, stopping distances get longer. Your brakes need to be in their best shape before any long drive. Pay attention to a few warning signs before you go.
- Squealing, grinding, or scraping sounds when you brake
- Vibration or pulsing through the brake pedal
- The car pulling to one side when you slow down
